Ungava was another one of the fabulous "U" pups: Upshot, Unique, Upbeat, Ustinov, Uppercut, etc., and she was owned by the Napoleo Kennels of Quebec City. Here, her owner, Denis Gros-Louis was handling her to Best Of Opposite Sex at the St. Bernard Club of Ontario specialty. As you can see, Ungava had excellent length of leg and was a big upstanding girl. Tragically, she was one of the fine dogs Denis lost in a horrible kennel fire. To his credit, Denis put the pain of that event behind him, built a lovely new home in Quebec City and is looking forward to his May litter out of Xquisite, his Taboo daughter who has been bred to Ustinov.

When we first started in the early 70's, there were a hundred or more St Bernard breeders in Canada. These days there are only a few dozen. The majority of the dog shows in Canada do not have any Saint entries. Be that as it may, the more serious Canadian fanciers are members of the St Bernard Club of America and they head south to seek competition. Ungava, for example, took second in the large Open Smooth class at a National under Ivan Palmbald. Watch for Denis and his puppies at future Nationals!
